Multi-Device
Official feature that connects the same number on up to 4 devices without your cell phone online — the basis that made WhatsApp Web useful for companies.
Multi-Device is the official WhatsApp feature that allows you to connect the same number on up to 4 devices simultaneously, without needing your cell phone to be online all the time. It was released in 2021 and is the foundation that made WhatsApp Web truly useful for businesses.
What changed with multi-device
Before 2021, WhatsApp Web only worked if the cell phone was on, online and nearby. Battery discharged? Web fell. Cell phone without signal? Web froze. Multi-device cuts this dependency — each device has its own session, and WhatsApp synchronizes everything via Meta.
How to activate
- On your cell phone, open WhatsApp.
- Menu (⋮) → Connected devices.
- Tap Connect a device.
- Scan the QR Code from the other device's screen (WhatsApp Web, second cell phone, Desktop).
- Synchronization takes 30s-2min the first time.
Important Limits
- 4 simultaneous devices + 1 main cell phone.
- Main cell phone may be offline for up to 14 days; then it needs to be reopened.
- Voice and video calls require primary cell phone online (current limitation).
- Some functions (Status Stories) still only work on the main cell phone.
Why multi-device is critical for businesses
Without multi-device, two agents would not be able to use the same WhatsApp Web — one would drop the other's session. With multi-device, you can have reception + partner + assistant working simultaneously. It is the technical basis that makes CRMs for WhatsApp Web viable, such as Zapext.
