How to export WhatsApp contacts (4 methods + spreadsheet)

Your contact list is your WhatsApp's most valuable commercial asset — and keeping it locked onto a single device is risking your business on a lost cell phone. Export contacts solves spreadsheet backup, migration and analysis. Here are the 4 methods, from native to professional, and the rules of what you can (and cannot) do with the exported list.

First things first: what WhatsApp exports (and what it doesn't)

WhatsApp doesn't have an "export all contacts" button — contacts belong in the phone's address book, not in the app. What exists are indirect paths, each with a scope:

• Cell phone calendar — exports who is saved (method 1 and 2).
• One-on-one chat — exports a chat history (method 3).
• Extension on WhatsApp Web — exports the conversation base with tags and funnel data (method 4).

Method 1 — Export cell phone phonebook (VCF)

1. Open the Contacts app on your phone.
2. Menu → Manage contacts → Export → choose "Export to .vcf file".
3. The generated .vcf file contains all saved contacts — send to email or cloud.

Limit: exports the entire agenda (including non-clients) in VCF format, which requires conversion to become a spreadsheet.

Method 2 — Google Contacts (the path to Excel/Sheets)

1. With your calendar synced to your Google account, go to contacts.google.com on your computer.
2. Select contacts (or a contact marker/tag).
3. Export → choose Google CSV or Outlook CSV.
4. Open in Excel/Sheets: name, telephone and email in ready-made columns.

It is the most practical method for those who want the list in a spreadsheet without installing anything.

Method 3 — Export a specific conversation

Inside the chat: tap the name → scroll to "Export conversation" (with or without media). Generates a .txt of the history — useful for recording a negotiation, useless for a contact list. Do not confuse the two uses.

Method 4 — Bulk export via extension (the pro)

For those who use WhatsApp commercially, the problem with method 1-2 is that the phone's calendar does not reflect the operation: a client that has never been saved does not appear, and the spreadsheet comes out without any business context. Store the exported file with the same care as any personal data: secure location, restricted access, without circulating via open email.

Recommended backup routine

1. Monthly: export the base (method 2 or 4) and save with date in the file name.
2. Before any exchange of device, chip or computer: complete export.
3. Version: keep the last 3 backups — spreadsheet corruption or incomplete export happens.
