Cross-sell
Offer of a product or service complementary to what the customer has already purchased — different from upsell, which proposes a superior version.
Cross-sell is the offer of a product or service complementary to what the customer has already purchased. Different from upsell (superior version of the same product), cross-sell expands usage to adjacent category. WhatsApp is the most effective channel for automated cross-selling.
Classic examples of cross-selling
- Customer purchased notebook → 7 days later receives offer for mouse + HDMI cable.
- Customer purchased basic SaaS plan → 30 days later receives reporting module offer.
- Client had a dermatological consultation → 30 days later he receives an offer for an aesthetic procedure.
- Customer bought running shoes → 14 days later receives an offer for compression socks.
Why cross-selling through WhatsApp converts more
Cross-sell via email: 1-3% conversion rate. Cross-sell via WhatsApp within 30-60 days after purchase: 8-15%. Reason: relationship already exists (customer purchased), channel is personal, timing is controllable.
How to set up automated cross-sell
- Map pairs product-A → product-B in spreadsheet (which product complements which). Start with 10-20 highest value pairs.
- Automatic tag by purchase category via e-commerce webhook.
- Message scheduling 30 days after purchase with pair offer.
- Incentive Coupon (5-10%) to speed up decision.
- Stops automatically if the customer has already purchased the add-on.
Cross-sell that DOESN’T work
- Same offer for every customer (no segmentation).
- Offer on day of purchase (customer still processing).
- Unrelated product offer (looks like spam).
- No custom tone (generic message).
Metric that matters: average ticket increase
Before active cross-sell: average ticket R$ 250. After (30 days): R$ 295. 18% lift on the ticket, with no new acquisition cost. ROI typically exceeds 10x.
