DDI on WhatsApp: how to save and call international number
How to save and call an international number on WhatsApp: E.164 format (+DDI+number), table with the most searched DDIs, special rules for Argentina and Mexico and wa.me link without saving contact.
For save or call an international number on WhatsApp, assemble the number like this: sign +, country code, area code and number — no leading zeros, spaces or dashes. A cell phone from Lisbon becomes +351912345678; one from the US, +12025550123. If you prefer not to assemble by hand, the international number converter returns the ready format in seconds. Below: the pattern behind it, the table of most searched DDIs and the cure for the "number is not on WhatsApp" error.
The format that WhatsApp understands: E.164
WhatsApp identifies any phone on the planet by a single standard, the E.164 — the international telephone numbering standard. The anatomy is always the same: plus sign, DDI (the country code, such as 55 for Brazil or 351 for Portugal) and the full national number, totaling a maximum of 15 digits. No parentheses, dashes or spaces — this is decoration for the human eye; for the system, only the digits matter.
Three rules solve 90% of cases:
- Start with + and the DDI. It's the "+" that tells your cell phone that the number is international — without it, the phonebook may interpret the contact as a local number and WhatsApp won't find it.
- Remove the leading zero. Many countries use a "trunk zero" for domestic calls (the 07 on British cell phones, the 06 on French phones). This zero does not exist in international format: 07911 123456 in the UK becomes +447911123456.
- Do not paste output prefixes. The 00 (or 0021, 0015 and similar, operator codes used in calls from Brazil to abroad) does not enter: the "+" already fulfills this role.
Convert any number to seconds
Real example: a customer from Portugal sends the telephone number as written there — "912 345 678". To save, the manual way is: find out the DDI (351), remove spaces and dashes, check if there is a starting zero to remove (in Portugal there is not: cell phones have 9 digits and start with 9) and put everything together: +351912345678.
The fast way is the international number converter from Zapext: paste the number exactly as you received it — with a dash, space or parenthesis, it doesn't matter —, select the country and receive the ready format in two versions: with "+" to save in your phone's calendar and with just digits to use in a wa.me link, campaign or automation. It's free and works in the browser, without installing anything.
Table: the most searched DDIs by Brazilians
Country codes are defined by international standards and do not change overnight — what changes from country to country is the detail that knocks the beginner out, in the right column:
| Country | DDI | Be careful when formatting |
|---|---|---|
| United States and Canada | 1 | 10 digits after the DDI; there is nothing to remove |
| Portugal | 351 | Cell phones have 9 digits and start with 9 |
| Spain | 34 | Cell phones start with 6 or 7 |
| Argentina | 54 | Own rule on WhatsApp — see section below |
| Mexico | 52 | Own rule on WhatsApp — see section below |
| United Kingdom | 44 | Remove the leading 0 (07911... becomes 7911...) |
| Italy | 39 | Cell phones start with 3; there is nothing to remove |
| France | 33 | Remove the leading 0 (06... becomes 6...) |
| Germany | 49 | Remove leading 0 |
| Paraguay | 595 | Remove the initial 0 from cell phones (09xx becomes 9xx) |
| Uruguay | 598 | Remove leading 0 (099 becomes 99) |
| Chile | 56 | Cell phones start with 9 |
| Japan | 81 | Remove leading 0 (090 becomes 90) |
| Angola | 244 | Cell phones have 9 digits and start with 9 |
| Mozambique | 258 | Cell phones start with 8 |
| Brazil | 55 | DDD + 9 digits on cell phone (the ninth digit is mandatory) |
For those who are abroad and want to call a Brazilian number, the last line is the one that matters: +55, DDD without zero and the cell phone with the ninth digit — +5511987654321.
Argentina and Mexico: both cases with their own rules
Two neighbors have a special format within WhatsApp, documented in the application's official help center (checked in Jul/2026):
- Argentina (DDI 54): WhatsApp asks for a 9 between the DDI and the area code, and the "15" prefix that Argentines use locally should be removed. A Buenos Aires cell phone noted as "15 6123-4567" becomes +54 9 11 6123 4567 — 13 digits in total, written together: +5491161234567.
- Mexico (DDI 52): the help center advises you to include a 1 after 52 for mobile phones: +52 1 55 1234 5678.
If in doubt, test both variants on a wa.me link before saving: the one that opens the conversation is the right one. O converter already applies these exceptions automatically when selecting the country.
"The number is not on WhatsApp": the 6 common mistakes
This warning almost never means that the person does not have WhatsApp — it means that the number you entered does not correspond to any account. Check in this order:
- Trunk zero maintained. The number one mistake: saving +4407911... instead of +447911... Domestic zero does not exist in international format.
- Output prefix pasted into the number. 0055, 0021, 011 before DDI break identification. Just "+" and the DDI.
- Argentine or Mexican exception ignored. Without the 9 (Argentina) or 1 (Mexico), the number points to an account that does not exist.
- Contact saved without the "+". Without it, the cell phone may treat the number as local. Edit the contact and confirm that it starts with "+" and the DDI.
- Calendar that did not resynchronize. Correct contact, outdated WhatsApp: open the contacts tab in the app and tap update — or skip the calendar and open directly via the wa.me link.
- The person really doesn't have WhatsApp — or the number is fixed without an active account. Before insisting, it's worth testing without sending anything: the how to know if a number has WhatsApp shows three ways to check.
Link wa.me with DDI: chat without saving the contact
For a specific conversation — the hotel on the trip, a supplier abroad —, there’s no need to clutter up your diary. The universal WhatsApp link solves: wa.me/ followed by the complete number with DDI, only digits, without the "+". The Lisbon cell phone in our example is wa.me/351912345678; a US number, wa.me/12025550123. Paste it into the browser and the conversation opens instantly — on your cell phone or on WhatsApp Web.
You can include a pre-filled message with the text parameter, useful for website buttons and email signatures. O WhatsApp link generator assembles the complete link (number + message) without you memorizing any syntax — and the guide to how to create WhatsApp link covers advanced uses, from QR Code to link in ad.
Serving international clients on a daily basis
If the international number is not an exception, but routine — a store that exports, an agency that serves Brazilians abroad, consultancy with clients in Portugal —, two details elevate the service:
- Time zone. Commercial message at 3am from the customer burns the relationship. Work from your computer — WhatsApp allows you to connect up to 4 devices to the same number[1] — and use message scheduling so that each message goes out at a civilized time in the recipient's time zone. At Zapext, scheduling is done directly on WhatsApp Web.
- Organization by country and language. Tags like "Portugal", "USA" or "Spanish" separate the international portfolio, and quick answers saved in another language avoid rewriting the same presentation in English every week.
And the usual honesty: if your case is saving the number of a relative in Lisbon or calling Airbnb from your trip, you don't need any extension — the right format and a wa.me link will do the trick for free. Tool comes in when the volume of international contacts becomes operations.
To recap: + DDI + number, without leading zeros, paying attention to the exceptions of Argentina and Mexico. Leave the international number converter create the format for yourself and, for conversations without saving contact, generate the ready link in WhatsApp link generator.

Frequently asked questions
How to save an international number on WhatsApp?
Save the contact in the cell phone's address book in international format: + sign, country code, area code and number, without leading zeros, spaces or dashes. Example: +351912345678 (Portugal) or +12025550123 (USA). Then update the contact list on WhatsApp so the name appears.
Why does “the number is not on WhatsApp” appear?
Most of the time it is a format error: trunk zero kept (e.g.: +4407911... instead of +447911...), output prefix as 00 before the DDI, contact saved without the +, or the exceptions of Argentina (9 after 54) and Mexico (1 after 52) ignored. Only after checking the format do you consider that the person really does not have an account.
What is the DDI of the United States and Portugal?
United States (and Canada): DDI 1, followed by 10 digits. Portugal: DDI 351, with 9-digit cell phones starting with 9. On WhatsApp, they are +12025550123 and +351912345678, without spaces.
How to create a wa.me link for an international number?
Use wa.me/ followed by the full number with DDI, just digits and without the + sign. Example: wa.me/351912345678. By opening the link in the browser, the conversation starts without having to save the contact — and a link generator creates the version with a pre-filled message.
Does sending a message to an international number on WhatsApp pay for an international call fee?
No. WhatsApp messages and calls travel over the internet (Wi-Fi or mobile data), so talking to a number in another country costs the same as talking to your neighbor: just the data consumption of your plan.
