WhatsApp Web privacy: how to blur chats and hide messages on screen
WhatsApp Web has no blur setting. Lock it with App lock, hide message text in notifications and blur your chats on screen with an extension's privacy mode.
WhatsApp Web has no built-in blur, but you can hide your chats on screen in three ways: lock the tab with WhatsApp's own App lock, stop notifications from showing message text, and blur your chats on screen with an extension's privacy mode. Use App lock when you step away, and blur when people can see your screen while you keep working.
This guide is for shop owners, consultants, agents and small teams who answer customers on WhatsApp Web all day, often on a monitor that colleagues, customers or a video call can see. Each option below says what it hides and what to keep in mind before you rely on it.
Quick answer: which option hides what
| Option | What it hides | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| App lock (built into WhatsApp Web) | The whole WhatsApp Web tab, behind a password | Nothing while locked, but you cannot work until you unlock it |
| Chat Lock with a secret code (WhatsApp) | Chosen chats, moved to a Locked Chats folder | All other chats stay visible |
| Notification preview settings (WhatsApp Web, Chrome, Windows, macOS) | Message text in pop-up notifications | The chat list and open chat stay visible in the tab |
| Extension privacy mode (for example, Zapext) | Your chats, blurred on screen while you keep working | It is not a password: anyone at your unlocked computer can switch it off |
| Locking your computer | Everything on the computer | You must sign back in before you can work |
You will usually combine two or three of these.
Option 1: lock WhatsApp Web with App lock
WhatsApp Web has a password lock. Current versions call it App lock; early reports called it Screen lock[1][2]. To turn it on:
- In WhatsApp Web, click Settings (the gear icon above your profile picture, bottom left).
- Open Privacy, scroll down and select App lock.
- Tick the box, then enter and confirm a password.
- Choose how long WhatsApp Web waits, after you stop using it, before it locks itself.
Once App lock is on, you can also lock straight away with Lock app in the three-dot menu[1].
Know the limits before you rely on it:
- The password covers only the current WhatsApp Web session in that browser. It is not shared with your other devices, and you set it again after you log out and back in[1].
- If you forget the password, log out of WhatsApp Web and link it again by scanning the QR code with your phone[2].
- A locked tab protects you when you walk away. It does not help while you are working, because you cannot read or reply until you unlock it.
Lock individual chats with a secret code
If only a few chats are sensitive, use Chat Lock on your phone. Locked chats move to a Locked Chats folder, and a secret code, different from your phone's unlock code, can hide that folder from the chat list[3]. WhatsApp's Help Center says you must create the secret code on your phone before you can open locked chats on WhatsApp Web[4].
Option 2: stop notifications from showing message text
A pop-up in the corner of the screen can show the sender's name and the start of a message about a price, a payment or a patient. Anyone nearby, or everyone on a video call, can read it before you do. There are four places to fix this.
- WhatsApp Web. WhatsApp's notification settings include a Show previews option that controls whether message text appears inside new-message notifications. Clear it to keep the alert without the text[5]. On WhatsApp Web, look under Settings > Notifications; labels can vary by version.
- Chrome. In Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > Notifications, you can add web.whatsapp.com under "Not allowed to send notifications"[6]. This stops the leak completely, but you also lose the new-message alert.
- Windows 11. In Settings > System > Notifications you can turn notifications on or off per app and hide their content on the lock screen. Under "Turn on do not disturb automatically" you can mute notifications when you duplicate your display or use an app in full screen[7].
- macOS. In System Settings > Notifications, set Show previews to When Unlocked or Never. You can also pause notifications while you mirror or share the display[8].
The catch: the Windows and Mac settings apply to every app, not just WhatsApp. They also do nothing for the chat list and the open conversation inside the tab.
Option 3: blur chats on screen with a privacy mode
This is the option people mean when they search for "blur WhatsApp Web". WhatsApp Web has no blur setting of its own, so this layer comes from Chrome extensions. Privacy-focused extensions exist, such as WA Web Plus, which had 2,000,000 users and a 4.7 rating on the Chrome Web Store as of Oct 2026[9]. CRM extensions can include a privacy mode too. Zapext is one of them, and it is the one we describe here.
Zapext is a Chrome extension that adds a CRM inside WhatsApp Web: a Kanban pipeline, labels, quick replies, reminders and scheduling, keyword auto-reply, voice message transcription and privacy mode. It works with the account you already have, regular or Business, on the same number, and it does not use the WhatsApp Business API.
What Zapext's privacy mode does
Switch privacy mode on and your chats are blurred on screen[10]. The Chrome Web Store listing puts it the same way: switch it on and chat content disappears from the screen[11]. Switch it off again when you need to read a conversation.
A practical setup for an open office is to keep privacy mode on whenever you are not reading or replying, and to make sure it is on before someone stands behind you or you start a screen share. Unlike a locked tab, it lets you keep working in the same window, so it fits into a normal working day instead of interrupting it.
How to turn it on
- Open the Zapext page on the Chrome Web Store, click Add to Chrome and confirm Add extension.
- Go to web.whatsapp.com and log in to WhatsApp as usual, with WhatsApp's own QR code.
- Zapext appears as a tab on the left side of the screen. Click the avatar icon and log in with your email and password, or create your Zapext account right there.
- Turn on privacy mode in Zapext. Your chats are blurred on screen.
- Turn it off again when you need to read them.
Zapext is listed on the Chrome Web Store, where it had 552 users and a 5.0 rating from 45 reviews when we checked in October 2026[11]. Privacy mode is included in Starter and Plus. Install on Chrome.
What privacy mode does not do
- System and browser pop-up notifications are controlled by Chrome and your operating system, so set them as in Option 2.
- It is not a password. Anyone who sits at your unlocked computer can switch it off. Use App lock or lock the computer when you leave the desk.
- It works only on a desktop or laptop, in Chrome or another Chromium browser such as Edge, Brave, Opera or Vivaldi. There is no mobile version, and nothing changes on your phone.
Where your data lives: Zapext's CRM data (pipeline, labels and notes) is stored encrypted on your computer, and you can back it up and export it. As stated in Zapext's Privacy Policy, the content of your chats is not sent to Zapext servers. Zapext never asks for your WhatsApp password; you log in with a separate Zapext account.
Before you install any privacy extension
A privacy extension runs on the same page as your chats, so choose it with care. In October 2025, researchers reported more than 100 Chrome extensions that used WhatsApp Web to send spam in breach of WhatsApp's rules[12]. Before you install one:
- Check the developer's name, website, contact details and privacy policy on the store page.
- Read the permissions Chrome shows before it installs anything, and the recent reviews.
- Avoid any extension that asks for your WhatsApp password or verification code.
Zapext's permissions and data handling are explained on its security page. For a wider look at what extensions can add to WhatsApp Web, see the WhatsApp extension guide, and for a side-by-side with a privacy-focused tool, read Zapext vs WA Web Plus.
Desk and browser habits that close the gaps
- Lock the computer every time you stand up. Press Windows key + L on Windows[13] or Control-Command-Q on a Mac[14]. No setting inside WhatsApp protects an unlocked computer as well as this does.
- Share a window, not your whole screen. On video calls, share only the app you are presenting, and keep WhatsApp Web in a different window.
- Close the tab before an important screen share. It is the only way to be sure that nothing pops up.
- Use your own Chrome profile on a shared computer. Then WhatsApp Web stays signed in only in your profile, not in a colleague's.
- Check linked devices on your phone. WhatsApp lists every computer linked to your account, and you can log out of any of them from the phone[15]. Do this after using a computer at a shop counter, a co-working space or a client's office.
If several people answer customers from one number, give each person their own computer and login rather than sharing one open screen. See how multiple users can work on one WhatsApp number.
Which setup for which situation
- Open office or reception desk: keep privacy mode on while you are not reading a chat, turn off notification previews, and set App lock to a short timeout.
- Video calls with clients: use Do Not Disturb or pause notifications while sharing, share a single window, and keep privacy mode on if WhatsApp Web has to stay visible.
- Cafes, trains and co-working spaces: keep privacy mode on whenever you are not reading, sit with your back to a wall, and lock the computer before you get up.
- Shared shop computer: separate Chrome profiles, App lock, and a regular check of linked devices from the owner's phone.
If you also want to run your sales from the same tab, see the WhatsApp CRM guide and how to use WhatsApp Business on a PC.
Pricing: Starter costs ≈ US$ 57/year (≈ US$ 4.76/month) or ≈ US$ 9.60/month (charged in Brazilian reais, BRL, at 5.2 BRL/USD on 28 Sep 2026)[16]. Paid plans include a 7-day money-back guarantee, and you can cancel anytime[17]. See pricing.

Frequently asked questions
Does WhatsApp Web have a privacy mode or blur option?
No. WhatsApp Web has no setting that blurs chats on screen. It does have App lock, which hides the whole tab behind a password, and notification settings that can hide message text in pop-ups. To blur your chats on screen while you keep working, you need a Chrome extension with a privacy mode, such as Zapext.
How do I lock WhatsApp Web with a password?
In WhatsApp Web, open Settings, then Privacy, then App lock. Tick the box, set a password and choose how long WhatsApp Web waits before it locks itself. You can also lock it at once with Lock app in the three-dot menu. If you forget the password, log out and link WhatsApp Web again with the QR code.
Can someone see my WhatsApp messages on WhatsApp Web?
Yes, if WhatsApp Web is open on a computer that is not locked. Lock the computer when you step away, turn on App lock, and check the list of linked devices on your phone regularly. You can log out of any computer from that list, which is worth doing after you use a shared or public computer.
How do I stop WhatsApp Web notifications from showing the message?
Clear Show previews in WhatsApp's notification settings to keep the alert without the text. You can also block notifications for web.whatsapp.com in Chrome's site settings, hide notification content on the Windows lock screen, or set Show previews to When Unlocked or Never in macOS notification settings.
Does Zapext's privacy mode work on my phone?
No. Zapext runs only on a desktop or laptop, in Chrome or another Chromium browser such as Edge, Brave, Opera or Vivaldi, and there is no mobile version. Privacy mode blurs your chats in the WhatsApp Web tab on that computer and changes nothing on your phone. Privacy mode is included in both Starter and Plus.
